Project Description

Infrastructure Canada and the Public Works Ministry of Canada presented a bid for the design and construction of a new bridge over the St. Lawrence River as part of the St. Lawrence Corridor Project. This project, which covers a highway of about 8 km, includes a crossing over the St. Lawrence River between Montreal and Brossard that replaces the existing Champlain Bridge. The Champlain Bridge Replacement has been one of the largest P3 projects in North-America.

The new bridge is 3.4 km long and spans from Île-des-Soeurs to the west shore of the St. Lawrence River. It consists of one cable-stayed bridge and two approach bridges on its east and west sides. The west approach bridge is 2 km long and includes three independent decks. The lateral decks will carry vehicle and pedestrian traffic, while the central deck will carry bus traffic as well as tram traffic in the future.

Pedelta provided to the Construction Joint Venture conceptual design and value engineering services for the West approach at the tender phase. The engineering services also included the preliminary design of a typical steel pier cap for the approach viaducts, which allowed to accelerate construction. Pedelta also provided peer review and construction engineering services for other bridges, including the new Île-des-Soeurs viaduct and bridge P1 at Atwater. Pedelta was responsible for the design of the noise barriers of various segments.
