Mayor John Tory and city Couns. Mike Layton and Joe Cressy were at a ceremony on Tuesday morning to officially open the two-section stainless steel bridge, which crosses two sets of railway tracks, to the public.
"I'm proud to officially open this important piece of active transportation infrastructure that will connect key downtown communities," said Tory during this morning's ribbon cutting ceremony.
"This stainless steel bridge project — the first of its kind in Canada — shows the progress our City is making when we work together with CreateTO and the private sector to get things done for our residents." Tory continued.
"The design of the bridge is in of itself remarkable."
Pedelta, the lead designer of the project and the designer of these unique structures, is proud to bring this beautiful, cutting-edge stainless steel structure to Toronto – and to North America – making a difference in how pedestrians and cyclists experience and interact with their physical environment at the birthplace of the city,” says Juan Sobrino, Pedelta’s CEO and designer of bridges. “Fort York Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge is a vital new connection in the city that the Dufferin-Pedelta design-build team has chosen to re-imagine in stainless steel to enhance its look, durability and sustainability.”
