Project Description

The objective in this urban development project was to integrate a 3 km long stretch of the existing railway line into the urban fabric of the town of Vic (Barcelona Province).

The project was carried out in 2002 and included the design of structural elements which allowed to put the railway underground partially or totally.  Structural elements including walls, box-type closed frames, diaphragm walls using piles, etc. were designed and utilized in nearly the whole length of the project.

Construction in an urban area, with close proximity to buildings and a high water table, while having to maintain the railway in operation posed difficulties in the conception and calculation of the structural solutions. The scope of the design was to study different alternatives in order to reduce the execution time. Design was carried out meeting the Spanish code requirements.
